Bright Places

The Academic Medical Center Amsterdam, known as the AMC, is a university hospital affiliated with the University of Amsterdam and one of the largest medical centres in the Netherlands. The AMC has recently undertaken major renovations to ensure its facilities remain at the leading edge of today’s standards in healthcare. The resulting toilet block renovation at the AMC is, in particular, an excellent case study of design that affords maximum hygiene and ease of maintenance, whilst also creating spaces with a positive, cheerful atmosphere.

Specialist Sanitary Space Design

Part of a larger overall renovation, the renovation of the toilet blocks was undertaken by Bright Spaces, who are specialist interior designers and space planners in the area of creating, facilitating and maintaining sanitary areas. They worked together with the building’s original architect, AAArchitecten, to determine the overall look of the new toilet blocks.

Featuring glass walls and seamless floors that ensure cleaning and maintenance are easy to achieve, the result is light, bright and colourful.

The Latest Villeroy & Boch Innovations in Hygiene and Health

For the selection of sanitary products, Bright Spaces worked together with Villeroy & Boch. Selected sanitary fittings include Villeroy & Boch’s Evana Washbasins along with rimless, Architectura toilets. The main features of these products are their modern appearance and anti-bacterial properties made possible with options such as Ceramicplus, a dirt repelling, easy to care for finish developed in Villeroy & Boch laboratories. The Ceramicplus finish option was used here together with AntiBac, Villeroy & Boch’s innovative hygienic glaze. This glaze contains silver ions that have been proven to reduce the growth of bacteria on ceramic surfaces and toilet seats by more than 99%.

In addition to ensuring maximum hygiene and cleanliness, Ceramicplus and AntiBac are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. In particularly, these finishes result in lower amounts of cleaning solvents and solutions needed in order to achieve maximum hygiene and cleanliness.

Future Specialist Collaborations

The collaboration between Bright Spaces was a successful one leading to potential future specialist projects that demand high hygiene standards. ‘Villeroy & Boch was thinking actively about the best products to offer and about how they can deliver the best our and our customer’s requirements,’ Bright Spaces say.
