Situated in the heart of Munich’s Olympic Park, the SAP Garden has emerged as one of the most modern multipurpose sports arenas in Europe. Planned by the Danish architectural firm 3XN and the landscape architects Latz+Partner for the client Red Bull Stadion München GmbH, the project takes its name from the software group SAP. Construction began in January 2020 and the official opening was in autumn 2024. The highly frequented sanitary areas are fitted with tried-and-tested products from Villeroy & Boch, including accessories and assembly systems, designed to withstand the most demanding conditions.

Covering a surface area of around 22,500 m², the building’s clear design language with a vertically structured facade and extensive green roof area integrates harmoniously in the park landscape. One particularly striking feature: 260 vertical pilaster strips – between 11.6 and 18.2 metres long and weighing up to one tonne – wrap around the structure. Their shape is inspired by ice hockey sticks, a subtle reference to the building’s use.

Multipurpose use

The main hall, with space for around 11,500 spectators, is the regular venue for the home matches of the arena’s two main users, EHC Red Bull Munich (German ice hockey league) and FC Bayern Munich basketball. In addition to the central playing field, the SAP Garden also has three entirely separate ice sports spaces with a combined ice surface area of 5,400 m². These spaces are designed primarily for training, development of young talent and amateur or club sports. Additional sports and cultural activities complete the event spectrum, complemented by a spacious hospitality area with 1,111 seats.

Carefully planned sanitary areas

The sanitary areas in the SAP Garden meet every requirement for high-traffic public facilities – with intelligent product and system solutions from Villeroy & Boch which impress with their robust material quality and a clear, timeless design that integrates perfectly in the overall architectural concept.

A total of 301 drop-shaped Newo wall-mounted toilets have been installed in the toilet areas, all featuring the rimless DirectFlush technology for high flushing performance and low water consumption. The open rim also makes the toilets quick to clean, hygienic and economical. The appropriate ViConnect systems were used to install the toilets, including flush plates and ViProtect sound insulation systems.

The washrooms are fitted with 136 washbasins from the Newo collection. Rows consisting of a total of 117 rectangular undercounter washbasins from the Loop & Friends series have also been installed, with a delicate streamlined design that creates a look that is both aesthetic and functional.

The products from the ViCare series provide standard-compliant solutions for the accessible sanitary areas, with 22 elongated wall-mounted toilets with rimless DirectFlush technology and 22 washbasins with space for wheelchair access. Folding grab handles and wall rails provide additional safety and comfort. The fittings meet the specifications of DIN 18040 and allow independent use by people with restricted mobility.
