Lake Tegernsee is located around 50 kilometres south of Munich, in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. Like the town of Tegernsee, it is a popular destination for day trips and holidays – tourism is an important economic factor for the communities of the Tegernsee Valley. In March 2023, the first urban hotel opened in Tegernsee town centre: the 4-star Superior Hotel Caro & Selig.

The Hotel Caro & Selig is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection, a reference worldwide for independent hotels with distinctive and unique designs. The boutique hotel is the first new construction for the Autograph Collection brand in Germany. With its curving shape and light-wood facade, the building is architecturally striking and yet integrates harmoniously in its surroundings. The hotel has 123 rooms and suites, three conference rooms for meetings and events, as well as a wellness area and a gym. The “FREYHEIT” restaurant creates dishes showcasing regional and seasonal ingredients. One particular highlight in the hotel is the “NI BAR & Rooftop Terrace”, a 380-square-metre space from which guests can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of alpine peaks and Lake Tegernsee.

A modern city hotel with a royal history

The Caro & Selig is named in honour of Caroline of Baden (1776 – 1841), the first Queen of the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Bavaria from 1st January 1806. She is said to have been a warm-hearted, generous and open-minded person. She fell in love with the scenic landscapes around Lake Tegernsee on her very first visit. In 1816, she ordered the conversion of Tegernsee Abbey into a castle which she and her husband, King Maximilian Joseph I, used as a summer residence. This became a very special place of relaxation and happiness for her. The construction of the Caro & Selig pays tribute to Queen Caroline’s legacy: her influence, clearly visible in feminine touches, elegant shapes and traditional materials, is a recurring theme in the hotel design.

A fresh take on Bavarian tradition

The interior design of the Caro & Selig is the work of the multiple award-winning Hamburg architectural practice JOI-DESIGN. The curving shape of the facade is reflected in the reception area, where round shapes meet light wood and gold details to create a relaxed and yet stylish atmosphere. The elegantly understated colour concept is inspired by the Bavarian flag and features the typical colours of white and blue, combined with delicate greys and touches of gold. It creates a welcoming, friendly atmosphere throughout the entire hotel and in its 109 rooms and 14 suites. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors allow daylight to flood into the large rooms, all with their own balcony. Traditional materials such as leather and wood add an extra warm and cosy note to the interior design.

Exclusive washbasin special edition with a blue rim

The colour concept continues in the modern bathrooms, which are partly integrated openly in the rooms: soft grey tiles and light wooden furniture provide a perfect backdrop for the brilliant white Villeroy & Boch bathroom ceramic. The surface-mounted washbasins from the Artis series are particular highlights: designed specially for the Caro & Selig as a customised version with a blue rim – in the colour Ocean to reflect the hotel’s corporate identity. The precise line further emphasises the delicacy of the oval basins in high-quality TitanCeram with a dirt-repellent CeramicPlus finish.

In total, 120 customised Artis washbasins were supplied for the Hotel Caro & Selig, along with 140 coordinating wall-mounted toilets from the Avento series, which impress with their clear shape combined with optimum hygiene and easy cleaning as rimless DirectFlush models.
